Kirin Cup tournament programme

The players packed their bags after the final First Division game against Liverpool on the 20 May and flew off to Japan to complete in the eighth Kirin Cup tournament held in Tokyo between 26 May to 4 June 1985. The Kirin Cup tournament was founded in 1978 and organised by the Kirin Brewery Company with the entries coming from both club and international sides.

The Hammers faced stern opposition against the Japan and Uruguay National sides, Santos (Brazil), Malaysian Tigers and the Japanese champions Yomiuri. The format for the tournament saw each team playing each other in a single group, with the top two placed teams playing off in the Final.

Santos defeated the Hammers 2-1 in Shimizu City, two days later in Okayama the host national side Japan were held to a 2-2 draw, goals from Steve Potts and Dave Swindlehurst. Malaysian Tigers were comprehensively beaten 9-2 with Swindlehurst scoring four, a goalless draw followed with Japanese V2 club side Yomiuri in Sapporo.

The final match in Nagoya ended 1-1 against the national side of Uruguay which left the Hammers third in the table.

The final was held at the Tokyo National Stadium where Brazilian side Santos beat the Uruguay national team 4-2.

After a dreadful start to the season the Hammers received some respite and a turn of fortune with a 2-1 win against Oxford United at the Manor Ground in October 1987.

West Ham carved out a winning performance based on a solid defensive formation. Manager John Lyall admitted afterwards “the lads did their backs to the wall stuff brilliantly”.

The Hammers endeavours didn’t go unnoticed by the Football League sponsors as they scooped the Barclays Bank “Performance of the Week” silver salver.
