International Amateur Soccer Tournament

2009-10

To mark their visit to Upton Park for the Bobby Moore Cup the Spanish team Villarreal Club de Fútbol presented a gift of a yellow submarine.

Villarreal were founded in 1923, and based in the province of Castellón within the Valencian Community.

The club is nicknamed El Submarino Amarillo (Yellow Submarine) due to its yellow home kit. The club also see themselves as a low-profile team compared to Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Valencia CF, hence a submarine.

West Ham United and the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK announce a new three-year partnership agreement.

The inaugural game for the new Bobby Moore Cup was played out in front of a Boleyn Ground audience in the prestigious pre-season friendly against Spanish giants Villarreal C.F.

Fittingly it began with Matthew Upson - who was wearing the No.6 shirt for the final time before it was substituted permanently at half-time in memory of Bobby Moore, almost 50 years after the defender made his League debut for the club.

A lively encounter saw both teams earn a share of the spoils a Carlton Cole strike had given the Hammers an early lead after just 80 seconds. However that was cancelled out shortly before the half-time whistle by Santi Cazorla. As a result of the draw the Cup was shared by both sides.
